TRS Bastion Karimnagar To Remain Upright, Choppadandi Could Go Awry

The Karimnagar Assembly Constituency in the undivided Karimnagar district finds its roots in the peak of Telangana agitation. Caretaker Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao (KCR), who represented Karimnagar in Lok Sabha between 2004-2009, considers the city as a special place in the context of its contribution to the agitation. He was later in 2004 inducted to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's cabinet.

After the formation of Telangana, the TRS fielded Gangula Kamalakar against BJP candidate Bandi Sanjay Kumar, who was defeated by 24,754 votes in 2014. Out of the 1,88,673 votes polled in the 2014 election, Kamalakar secured 77,209 votes.

This time around, the Congress fielded former Karimnagar MP and current TPCC working president Ponnam Prabhakar as its candidate for the December 7 polls. In the triangular fight between Kamalakar, Bandi Sanjay and Ponnam Prabhakar, the TRS seems to have an edge taking into account the caste equations and Muslim minority voters in the constituency.

The Choppadandi (SC) Assembly Constituency in the undivided Karimnagar district was largely influenced by the Telangana agitation before and during the 2014 elections. To the surprise of many, TRS candidate Bodige Shobha was voted to power with a majority of 54,981 votes over Congress's Suddala Devaiah.

Interestingly, Bodige Shobha was not retained by KCR for the upcoming Assembly elections. She is now contesting as a BJP candidate against TRS's Sunke Ravi Shankar and Congress candidate Medipalli Satyam.
