Shadnagar: Good Old Pocket Borough Of Congress May Go TRS Way Again

The Shadnagar assembly constituency, which was previously in Mahbubnagar district, is now a part of Rangareddy district, with Shamshabad as its headquarters. Considered a Congress bastion for many years, it was from here that Burgula Ramakrishna Rao, former chief minister was elected as the first MLA representing Shadnagar.

Shadnagar in recent years, shot into prominence mainly due the ever-widening landscape of Hyderabad and the international airport at Shamshabad.

Shadnagar saw a fairly high voter turnout (slightly over 80%), with a voter base of over 1,70,000.

Shadnagar was represented in the recently dissolved House by Y.Anjaiah Yadav, of the Telangana Rastra Samithi (TRS), who had defeated C. Prathap Reddy of the Congress by over 17,000 votes in the 2014 polls. Interestingly, the two rivals face-off once again in the upcoming Telangana elections slated to be held on December 07.

While the TRS has strengthened its hold on the area, Prathap Reddy is no push-over and will try hard to milk the anti-incumbency factor. The Congress here, as its strategy elsewhere, has been harping on the unfulfilled promises of the TRS and its supremo. However, being a semi-urban pocket the TRS could retain the seat, analysts say.
