Mahbubnagar, Never Easy To Predict

11 Nov, 2018 13:24 IST|Sakshi
In <a href="https://www.sakshipost.com/topic/Mahbubnagar">Mahbubnagar</a>, the race gets tighter more often than not.

Mahbubnagar assembly constituency is one of the unpredictable segments. The result could be determined by a last minute swing. While splitting of votes does drive an election result in many constituencies in Mahbubnagar, the race gets tighter more often than not. The fact that Yennam Srinivas Reddy of the BJP won the 2012 by-election by under 1900 votes defeating Syed Ibrahim of the TRS, only to lose by over 3000 votes in a close contest to V. Srinivas Goud of the TRS in 2014, goes to prove this.

Fingers crossed on Mahbubnagar assembly constituency this time around. The TRS is seen to have a decided advantage. While the Congress could field a minority candidate, its alliance with the TDP may not help in constituencies with a sizeable Muslim population, such as Mahbubnagar. In such seats, TDP could become the proverbial albatross around the neck of the Congress, in spite of the fact that the combined vote share of the TDP and Congress adds up to more than the TRS count.

Kalwakurthy assembly constituency

Challa Vamshichand Reddy of the Congress won this seat in 2014 by a narrow margin of 78 votes over BJP's T. Achary. A stronghold of the Congress, Kalwakurthy with close to 2 lakh voters, is the party veteran Jaipal Reddy's backyard. He started his political career representing Kalwakurthy as an MLA nearly 5 decades ago. Interestingly, it was from here that the iconic NTR contested in 1989 six years after he founded TDP, and lost to Chittaranjan of Congress in a David and Goliath fight.
