New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday, in a major development in the pending issues in Andhra Pradesh-Telangana bifurcation, directed the Union government to issue a notification for division of the Hyderabad High Court at the earliest. Depending on the status of the construction of the new High Court premises at Amaravati, the notification should be issued, the apex Court said.

After hearing the Centre's special leave petition that challenged the 2015 Supreme Court judgement stating the High Court of AP should be set up on the territory of the State, the SC bench headed by Justice AK Sikri and Justice Ashok Bhushan passed this order. The AP government hoped that the new High Court building would be constructed before December 15.

Appearing for Telangana government, Senior counsel Mukul Rohatgi said that the AP government was deliberately delaying the High Court bifurcation. The delay in bifurcation is affecting the appointment of judges, staff and others.

Responding to the arguments, the bench said it desired the High Court to be divided at the earliest. The Centre should issue notification for the bifurcation keeping in view the new High Court's readiness.
