Heavyweights Who Won The 1952 Elections

Few General Elections in Undivided Andhra Pradesh had witnessed such a galaxy of contestants as the 1952 Assembly elections date. Among the prominent winners of this general election were Burgula Ramakrishna Rao who became the first chief minister of Hyderabad. Burgula, who contested on a Congress ticket from Shadnagar was the chief minister for about 4 years, 8 months till Andhra Pradesh was formed as a state.

Incidentally, the last Nizam of erstwhile Hyderabad state, Mir Usman Ali Khan of the Asif Jahi dynasty took oath of office along with chief minister Burgula as Raj Pramukh (A post created to appease the rulers of princely states at the time of their merger into the Indian Union, a move engineered by Sardar Patel. A Rajpramukh could act as the governor of state back then).

Suravaram Pratapa Reddy, a crusader of the library movement and a leading social reformer in the erstwhile Hyderabad state, contested from the Wanaparthy constituency on a Congress ticket and was elected to the state Assembly.

Ravi Narayana Reddy won the election from both the Nalgonda Lokn Sabha constituency as well as the Bhongir Assembly constituency as a PDF candidate. Narayan Reddy gained prominence as a frontranking leader of the Telangana Armed Struggle along with Makhdoom Mohiuddin and Raj Bahadur Goud.

Konda Laxman Bapuji, the heavyeight of Telangana movement contested successfully the 1952 Assembly Elections from Asifabad constituency in Adilabad district on a Congress ticket. Bapuji later went on to become a minister.

Dr Marri Chenna Reddy who spearheaded the 1969 Telangana movement and became chief minister of Andhra Pradesh later, contested the 1952 Assembly polls successfully from Vikarabad constituency. Channa Reddy carved a niche for himself in AP Politics and was among the tallest leaders from the Telangana region.

Gopal Rao Ekbote, a successful lawyer, contested the 1952 Assembly elections from Musheerabad constituency and won on a Congress ticket. He was the education and Parliamentary Affairs minister from 1954-56. Ekbote contested in the 1957 elections and was elected to the state assembly once again. In 1962, he became a judge of the AP High Court and rose to become the chief justice of AP High Court.

Valluru Basavaraju (VB Raju), contested from the Secunderabad constituency on a Congress ticket and won the election. He later became the revenue minister in erstwhile Andhra Pradesh state and played a key role in state politics.

KV Ranga Reddy, Dr Marri Chenna Reddy's maternal uncle, Konda Venkata Ranga Reddy won the 1952 election from Shabad constituency. Later, he became the deputy chief minister of the state. Incidentally, the Ranga Reddy district is named after him.
