Voter-verified paper audit trail (VVPAT) -enabled electronic voting machines (EVMs)

Hyderabad: In the context of the Election Commission's announcement of the Assembly election dates in Mizoram, Rajasthan, Telangana, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh and the usage of the Voter-verified paper audit trail (VVPAT) -enabled electronic voting machines (EVMs) for polling, an American Professor appears to have discovered a new way to gain unauthorized access into the machines with just a month to go for the polls.

In a video posted online by Professor J Alex Halderman of the University of Michigan, he claims that by sending SMS to the EVMs, the outcome of the voting would be seriously compromised. According to a BBC report, the Professor found a way to alter the outcome of the voting results through a a microprocessor and a Bluetooth radio attached to the EVMs.

Despite being regarded as the world's most secure voting machines, the VVPAT-fitted EVMs, a simple electronic device is all what is needed to tamper the votes, if one goes by the Professor's claims. In a notable observation, contrary to popular sentiments, no software-related attempts were made by the Professor Halderman in his bid to test the EVM's reliabilty.

However, the Election Commission officials opine that it would almost be impossible for an outsider to gain access to the machines and furthermore difficult to tamper with. Opening the device itself is a humongous task, an official said.
