Hyderabad: Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao (KCR) will convene a cabinet meeting here, at around 1 pm today, amid speculation of advancement of Telangana Legislative Assembly elections. According to sources, the cabinet, under the leadership of the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) Chief, will roll out certain populist schemes pertaining to unemployment allowance, farm loan waiver, job notifications and salary revisions to government employees of various departments.

It has to be seen whether KCR will pursue the possibility of dissolving the Telangana Assembly, given the strong support to the TRS across the State, as the survey results suggest. However, the high-profile public meeting 'Pragati Nivedana Sabha', which is scheduled to be held following the State cabinet meeting, at Kongara Kalan in the city outskirts, will be used to present the progress and developmental activities carried out by the State government in the last four years.

Earlier, speculation was rife that the TRS supremo would convene the cabinet meeting after the Pragati Nivedana Sabha, to announce the government's decision to dissolve the 119-member Telangana Legislative Assembly. However, the Telangana CM decided otherwise, and called for a cabinet meet ahead of the public meeting. The speculation around dissolving the Telangana Assembly comes amid the government's obligation to hold the Assembly session before September 27.

The TRS government might draw confidence with respect to its decision to dissolve the Assembly, taking into account the victory of current Prime Minister Narendra Modi's BJP government in Gujarat in 2002, when the party tasted success by choosing to go for early polls, eight months before the end of its full term.

With the aspirations of the unemployed youth in mind, KCR is expected to announce an unemployment allowance of Rs 1,000 per month to students aged under 35. Also, a new farm loan waiver of Rs 1.5 lakh, Rs 50,000 more than the TRS's promise of Rs 1 lakh in 2014, is expected to be announced, in addition to a hike in pensions to senior citizens from Rs 1,000 to Rs 2,000. The pending pay revision issue for the benefit of government employees is expected to be resolved at the Pragati Nivedana Sabha.
