Telangana brand ambassador: Sania breaks down

Tennis star Sania Mirza broke down during a TV interview over the question of her appointment as Telangana's brand ambassador.

Responding to the latest controversy over her being Telangana brand ambassador, the ace tennis player was in tears.

Speaking to NDTV over this, she said "I don't know why I have to justify my Indian-ness. It is unfair that I have to assert my Indian-ness. It is very hurtful."

BJP MLA Dr K Laxman criticized the appointment of tennis player Sania Mirza as brand ambassador of the newly-created Telangana state, saying that she is married to a Pakistani person and cannot be a Hyderabadi anymore.

"Am I being targeted because I am a woman. Is that because I am married to someone in other country? I got medals for India after I got married. I am proud to be an Indian," she questioned. 

"I am really sad I don't know if this happens in any other country. I think I am too stubborn for this country," teary-eyed Sania insisted. 

"I was born in Maharashtra but came to Hyderabad when I was 3 weeks old. My forefathers have lived in Hyderabad for more than a century.  I am proud to be from Hyderabad, I am proud to be from Telangana. If someone is going to question my roots and question my Indian-ness, I will not let that happen. Am too strong to let people like this break me," Sania Mirza asserted. 

Recently, giving tit-for-tat reply to the BJP MLA, she said she is an Indian and will remain so until the end of her life.
