New Delhi: Owned by Facebook, WhatsApp is the biggest social messaging platforms in the world. There are over 1.5 billion users on WhatsApp with close to a billion active users daily. This must be seen with the fact that the entire population of the world is over 7.7 billion.

WhatsApp regularly brings about updates for better functioning of the app. Sometimes you may also accidentally delete your chat history, how do you recover it?

Android

Steps you need to follow to recover chat history for Android:

Uninstall WhatsApp
Now open the WhatsApp database or the backup folder. Decide which backup file needs to be restored.
Rename the file from “msgstore-YYYY-MM-DD.1.db.crypt7” to “msgstore.db.crypt7”.
Install WhatsApp again
Tap restore next when asked
You can find the WhatsApp backup files from the /sdcard/WhatsApp/Databases folder, which will be saved with names such as “msgstore-YYYY-MM-DD.1.db.crypt7”.

WhatsApp app automatically creates backups every day at 4 am (local time) and then stores it on your phone’s internal memory or the microSD card used in the Android phone. So it is recommended that that you restore your chat history after 4 am.

From Google Drive:

Open WhatsApp.
Tap More options > Settings > Chats > Chat backup .
You can tap Back Up to create an immediate backup.
You can also tap Back up to Google Drive to set a backup frequency.
If you don't have a Google account already set up, tap Add account when prompted.
Tap Back up over to choose the network you want to use for backup. Please note that backing up over a cellular data network might result in additional data charges.

How to restore or transfer a backup?

Once you change your number or phone, just tap restore when asked.

If WhatsApp does not detect a backup, it could be because you are not logged into the same Google account or yo are not using the same number.

Your SD card or chat history could also be corrupted.

On iPhone/iPad

You must be signed in with your Apple ID that you use to access iCloud.
Must have iOS 7 or later.
For iOS 8 and later: iCloud Drive must be turned on
For iOS 7: Documents & Data must be turned on. You can check this by going to iPhone Settings > iCloud > Documents & Data, then making sure Documents & Data is turned on.
There must be enough free space on both your iCloud and iPhone.
