KCR said Telugu subject should be made compulsory from class 1 to 12 in both public and private schools

Hyderabad: Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao on Tuesday said Telugu subject should be made compulsory from class 1 to 12 in both public and private schools from the next academic year. If the schools fail to incorporate Telugu as one of the subjects, they will be derecognized, said KCR, while speaking at a meeting to discuss plans for five-day World Telugu Conference to be held from December 15 to 19 in the city.

"There is no second option for the schools, both in the government and private sector. They have to offer Telugu as a compulsory subject in every class. Those institutions refusing to implement the government decision will not henceforth get approvals from the state education department," said a senior official.

If the schools fail to incorporate Telugu as one of the subjects, they will be derecognized, said KCR, while speaking at a meeting to discuss plans for five-day World Telugu Conference to be held from December 15 to 19 in the city

The official further said that students could also take Urdu as an optional subject, adding, "The changes will be brought up In the next cabinet and if required the government will bring about a legislation." The task of preparing a syllabus for Telugu for class 1 to 12 was given to the Sahitya Academy.

The government sanctioned Rs50 crore for the World Telugu Conference and Rs5 crore to the Sahitya Academy and Rs2 crore to the Official Language Committee.
