Students Of Telugu States Spend More Time In Schools: NCERT Report

Hyderabad: A survey conducted by National Council of Educational Training and Research (NCERT) revealed that students in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh (AP) are left fatigued due to long study hours including recess time as well. The study titled as `National Study on Ten Year School Curriculum Implementation’ mapped out school patterns in the undivided state.

It was found that unlike other states, students in undivided AP spent more time at school as they put in between five-and-a-half and six-and-a-half hours of study time and they also had three recesses totaling to 80 minutes. And children spent more days in school with as many as 220 working days

The findings were concluded by looking into parameters such as number of working days, school hours, class periods and emphasis on subjects across the country.

It was found that unlike other states, students in undivided AP spent more time at school as they put in between five-and-a-half and six-and-a-half hours of study time and they also had three recesses totaling to 80 minutes. And children spent more days in school with as many as 220 working days.

The report found that despite having long duration recesses the findings showed students get fatigue and disinterested.

The study also looked in to the curriculum designed by State Council of Educational Training and Research (SCERT) which found that at primary level Mathematics was given more emphasis than other subjects and mother tongue was given more focus comparing to English.

Meanwhile, since government textbooks are outdated schools in Telangana have asked government to allow them to use books published by private publishers. To this, NCERT report suggested to delete the outdated information which will help reduce the extent of curriculum at the upper primary and secondary level.

However, the SCERT focus shifted at upper primary and secondary level. The study found that students spent eight periods every week on science and mathematics, while subjects such as English, social sciences and the mother tongue were allotted six periods a week.

Meanwhile, since government textbooks are outdated schools in Telangana have asked government to allow them to use books published by private publishers. To this, NCERT report suggested to delete the outdated information which will help reduce the extent of curriculum at the upper primary and secondary level.

“Doing this will lessen the burden on children. The essential or core components of the curriculum should be balanced in order to maintain high standards,” the report said.
