Subversion of democracy

The YSRCP on Monday lodged a strong protest against the undemocratic manner in which the ruling Telugu Desam Party and its chief Chandrababu Naidu was suberting the people's mandate in the local body polls.

YSRCP chief YS Jagan Mohan Reddy brought to the notice of Governor ESL Narasimhan about the way in which the TDP leaders and legislators made a mockery of democracy in the election of the chairpersons of the local bodies. He pointed out that even the district collectors were being intimidated by the TDP leaders.

Worried about bye elections

"Going by the sheer number of seats it had won, the YSRCP should have won 239 mandal praja parishads, 36 municipalities and 3 zilla parishad. But, the TDP encouraged defections and subverted democracy due to which the YSRCP could win 200 MPPs, 19 municipalities and 1 zilla parishad only," Jagan said.

In Prakasam and Nellore ZPs, senior TDP leaders like Karanam Balaram and Venkatagiri MLA have resorted to brazen irregularities and have tried every trick in the trade to win the ZP chief posts despite the YSRCP having clear majority. In Kurnool. a war like situation prevailed at the ZP office, Jagan pointed out.

Jagan further said that ever since TDP came to power, 17 YSRCP activists were brutally done to death and 113 were critically maimed. "If this is the situation now, we are doubtful as to how the bye elections to Nandigama, Allagadda assembly seats and Nandyal MP seats would be held," he said.

He appealed to the governor to intervene and protect democracy.
