The deceased was a former Sriperumbudur panchayat union committee chairman and AIADMK loyalist, but was removed from the party for his criminal activities. He was also the prime suspect in the murder of panchayat councilor and film producer PBG Kumaran in October 2012. He, later, joined the BJP.
On Wednesday, Venkatesan alighted from his car and was said to be walking towards a shop when the motorcycle-borne assailants surrounded him and killed him. They, also, threatened the driver before driving away from the scene.
Police shifted the body to Kancheepuram government general hospital for post mortem. Venkatesan was involved in crimes ranging from murder, extortion to holding kangaroo courts. He ran a metal scrap business besides real estate ventures. The murder is suspected to be the result of business rivalry and is said to be the handiwork of hired killers, police said.
