Pakistan skipper Sarfraz Ahmed, put himself in a pickle after making racist comments at the South African all-rounder, Andile Phehlukwayo. However, there has been no official statement from the ICC yet in this regard. It was widely reported on social media that Sarfraz made a racial comment which was picked up by the stump mics.

This incident took place in the second ODI match between Pakistan and South Africa held in Durban on Monday. It was during South Africa’s batting while the batsmen hit a 50 in the match. In the 37th over, Phehlukwayo comfortably handled the delivery from Shaheen Afridi to deep fine leg region for a single. As he got to the non-striker’s end, Sarfraz was heard saying in Urdu, “Abey kaale, teri ammi aaj kahaan baitheen hain? Kya parwa ke aaye hai aaj?”

A loose translation would say, “Hey black guy, where’s your mother sitting today? What has she prayed for your luck?” In an instant reaction from the commentary box Mike Haysman asked his fellow commentator and from former Pakistan Ramiz Raja, what Sarfraz just said. Not quite anticipating the googly Raja deflected the query saying, “Difficult to translate that, it’s a long sentence.”

Now the decision relies with the match officials to determine if Sarfraz’s comments fall under the ICC code of conduct for player behavior or the ICC's anti-racism code. According to the ICC code, “any conduct (whether through the use of language, gestures or otherwise) which is likely to offend, insult, humiliate, intimidate, threaten, disparage or vilify any reasonable person in the position of a Player, Player Support Personnel, Umpire, Match Referee, Umpire Support Personnel or any other person (including a spectator) on the basis of their race, religion, culture, color, descent, national or ethnic origin."
