Sparks fly in AP Assembly on Day 1

The Assembly began on a stormy note and the Day 1 saw heated arguments between an aggressive Opposition YSRCP and a beleaguered government on several issues including the special state status and the tragic stampede at Rajahmundry during the pushkarams.

Bowing to the pressure from the opposition, chief minister Chandrababu Naidu made a statement on the issue of special status and immediately later, the house was adjourned for the day.

When the house session began on Monday morning, the YSRCP gave an adjournment notice on the issue of special state status to Andhra Pradesh. It insisted on the assembly passing a unanimous resolution on the issue. The speaker also rejected the motion saying that the government would make a statement on the issue, which would be followed by a discussion and a resolution.

The condolence motion on Pushkaram tragedy victims also saw sparks fly. YSRCP chief and leader of the Opposition YS Jagan Mohan Reddy said Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu’s craving for publicity was personally responsible for the Pushkaram tragedy that claimed 29 lives at Rajahmundry.Even as the leader of the Opposition was speaking, his mike was cut, forcing the YSRCP members to raise slogans. YS Jagan strongly objected to the removal of mike. After this, pandemonium prevailed and the Speaker adjourned the house for 10 minutes. Another adjournment had to be made later in the day when YSRCP objected to the question hour being taken up in the afternoon.

Earlier, the YSRCP MLAs came to the Assembly in a procession from Gun Park. MLA Roja said they would raise the issue of Rishiteshwari’s death in Acharya Nagarjuna University and the attack on MRO Vanajakshi. She said the party will also raise the issue of deaths of students due to the stress and strain in the corporate educational institutions, including those owned by Minister Narayana.
