Should The Prime Minister Be Held Responsible For Rapes?

16 Apr, 2018 21:16 IST|Sakshi
Prime Minister Narendra Modi

The two rapes cases, though said to have happened long ago, surfaced recently and caught the attention of the entire nation. Incidentally, in both the episodes the victims were minors. From politics to communalism to justice for the victims and their families, the flurry of media attention has spread like a wildfire all over the country. The media has been playing judge and jury though investigations are still on.

People have taken a clear stand with regard to these incidents and while many tried to brand it as a political game, a few have given it a communal colour. With social media becoming a handy tool, the Kathua and Unnao rape incidents have become a free-for-all issue. Everyone has something to say about it. Then there are people who have directly blamed Prime Minister Narendra Modi for these incidents.

In Kathua, an eight-year-old girl from the Bakarwal community was heinously raped and murdered. The crime took place in January. The girl was missing for a week, her body was found on January 17. Eight people have been arrested for their involvement in the crime. In another incident from Uttar Pradesh’s Unnao, a Dalit girl was allegedly raped by BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar.

Can we hold a Prime Minister responsible for something that has happened without his knowledge? The main reason for laying the blame directly at the doorstep of Narendra Modi is because of his stoic silence over the rape cases and then the failure of the government to arrest several people who are either directly part of the crimes or are found guilty of helping and supporting the accused.

It is not that the PM had stayed silent all through. A few days ago, Modi spoke on the terrible rape of minors. He said that guilty won't be spared. He said that the daughters of the country who have suffered will definitely get justice and that his government will do everything possible to ensure that.

The PM named the incidents as shameful and said there was no place for such violence in a civilised society and that "as a country, as a society we all are ashamed of it. I want to assure the country that no culprit will be spared, complete justice will be done. Our daughters will definitely get justice," PM Modi said.
