Sensors to boost coastal security in state

Union Minister of State for Defence Jitendra Singh will arrive in Visakhapatnam on November 23 for the inauguration of a coastal chain of static sensors.

The ceremony is scheduled to be held at the Coast Guard District Headquarters in Visakhapatnam, official sources said. Sensors have been positioned along the coast of Andhra Pradesh as part of measures to boost coastal security in the wake of 26/11 sea-borne terror attack on Mumbai.
A chain of static sensors (radar units) have been envisaged to monitor the high sensitive traffic density areas along the coast of India, Eastern Naval Command (ENC) said in a release here today. The coastal surveillance network would provide an integrated picture of all the vessels traversing along the coast.
As part of this project, a chain of radar stations all along the coast line of Andhra Pradesh have been installed by the Ministry of Defence, it said. Visakhapatnam has six radar stations for undertaking surveillance of the region.
Two more remote operating stations (ROS) are expected to be commissioned shortly at Chennai and Paradip (Odisha) and this will complete the radar chain for the East Coast, the release said.
They will be linked subsequently with a similar chain functional on the West Coast, completing a comprehensive coastal surveillance network in the country, it added.
