Scour This Quarry, You Might Get Gold Coins

Thousands are eagerly converging at an abandoned stone quarry in Janakpura of Tonk district in Rajasthan. The reason? Possibility of striking gold as gold coins of 4th and 5th century vintage in the crevices of the stone quarry.

The police are having tough time controlling the milling crowds and mounted a round-the-clock vigil. For the past one week, the police are going round the villages asking people to voluntarily return the gold coins that they found.

The Archaeological Survey of India, which studied the coins said that they coins belong to the Gupta era. Ever since, the police have gone into a tizzy as estimates say that at least 2000 such coins were taken away.

Five personnel from the Rajasthan Armed Constabulary have been deployed at the quarry to dissuade people from scouring for coins. They have so far recovered nine gold coins.
