SC gives green signal for local body polls in AP

Decks have been cleared for the conduct of local body elections in the state, with the Supreme Court on Monday gave its green signal to this effect.

The court directed the State Election Commission to go ahead with  the elections to Zilla parishads, mandal parishads, municipalities and municipal corporations

Delivering its order, the SC allowed the local body elections to maintain status quo on the reservations.

The Court permitted the state government to take the 2001 census into consideration.

It may be mentioned here that the State Government has been dilly-dallying to hold the elections. In September last,  the Government challenged the High Court verdict that local body elections should not be conducted with more than 50 per cent reservations.

With SC order, the hurdles for local body polls have been cleared and the Election Commission may announce the date for elections anytime from now.
