In a heart-rending incident, Kanchenapalli Roja (22), candidate contesting for the post of Sarpanch in the Vamtalapudi gram panchayat, died of electric shock on Monday morning.

Her mother, Ganta Yellamam (45) tried to rescue her and lost her life too instantly.

Police said the mishap occurred when the sarpanch contestant, a resident of Vamtalapudi, was fixing the bulb at her home.

Her mother succumbed to the electric shock instantly, when she tried rescue her daughter. Both mother and daughter died on the spot, the police said. The entire village plunged into mourning today morning as they heard of Roja's death. Due to Roja death, the sarpanch election has been put off, but the election to the posts of ward members would be held as scheduled, it is learnt.

People from the nearby villages also poured into Roja's house after hearing the news of the deaths.
