Sakshi catches Cong, TDP violating child rights

On one side, the executive meeting of the Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) underway today at the LB stadium, is expected to be stormy with the presidents of all the district units likely to fiercely debate the separate state issue.

On the other the side,  the venue of the meet was  attacked by child rights activists on Saturday evening.
Several child labourers employed at the venue to make arrangements for the meeting were caught on Sakshi News channel camera. The children aged below 14 were seen lifting heavy weights.
The irony is that the Congress and TDP are constantly at loggerheads. However, here both of them adopted the same method of employing child labour without caring for children’s rights. Children studying in Class VII were seen working at the meeting venue for TDP president Chandrababu Naidu’s padaytra. They were putting up flexis and cut outs of
Naidu on the road side.
"They are all studying in seventh standard and working hard to put up large size cut outs," an eyewitness said, adding that the leaders who are overseeing the arrangements are not concerned about the children.
Both the parties had to face the wrath of child rights activists. 'Balala Hakkula Sangam' president, Achuth Rao demanded an explanation from PCC chief Botsa Satyanarayana.
He also wrote a letter to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on this. He alleged that the children were studying in government schools and forced to skip the classes.
As per the Child Labour (Prohibition and Regulation) Act, 1986—Child means a person who has not completed 14 years of age.
The Act prohibits employment of children in 18 occupations and 65 processes contained in Part A and B of the Schedule to the Act (Section 3). Any person who employs any child in contravention to the Act is liable for punishment with imprisonment for a term of three months, which may extend to one year or a fine of anywhere between Rs 10,000 - Rs 20,000.
Even, the government has cleared a proposal to put a complete ban on all work for children under the age of 14 and restrict non-hazardous work to adolescents between the age of 14 and 18.
