Review Age Limit for MBBS Admission: HC to MCI

11 Sep, 2016 12:48 IST|Sakshi
The MCI rejected the petitioner’s eligibility certificate stating he did not complete 17 years at the time of admission.

Hyderabad: The Hyderabad High Court on Saturday suggested that the Medical Council of India (MCI) and the central government should revisit rules regarding minimum age limit for admission to MBBS course.

The suggestion was made by Justice Suresh Kumar Kait while disposing a writ petition filed by V.S.V. Dheeraj. According to the petition, Dheeraj studied a course equivalent to MBBS from a foreign university. He wanted to write the eligibility test conducted by the MCI so that his degree can be recognised by the Indian Medical Association.

However, the MCI rejected his eligibility certificate to attend the screening test of the National Board of Examination stating he did not complete 17 years when he joined the MBBS. The judge directed the authorities to permit him to write the eligibility test and advised authorities to reconsider the issue of age limit of 17 years.
