Premature Baby Boy Weighing 450 Grams Survives In Vijayawada

Vijayawada: Born four months premature and weighing only 450 grams, a baby boy survived and is said to be now healthy weighing 2.2 Kgs. A team of doctors at the Rainbow Children’s Hospital in the city pulled out an absolute miracle by saving a baby boy, whose chance of survival at the time of birth was estimated to be a meagre 1.5 per cent. For over five long months, the doctors at the hospital persisted with continuous efforts to save the tiny baby, "whose body at the time of birth was so undersized that his feet were of thumbnail size."

Speaking at the press conference today, Dr Dinesh Kumar Chirla of the hospital said babies born weighing less than 1.5 kg have the slightest chance of survival. “The baby was born in September last year with underdeveloped organs and his feet were of thumbnail size. Only 1.5 per cent of babies are born this tiny and survival is extremely slim. However, sustained efforts of our neonatology wing helped the baby survive. That is why he is a miracle baby and this could be the first such case in our state,” he said.

Unfolding the case, he mentioned, “The mother of the baby boy had a preterm labour at 24 weeks of pregnancy, as she developed complications. She had a history of abortion." The mother joined the hospital after lots of consultants, she was treated for different medical problems before she could deliver the "miracle baby".
