Post-Brexit: Will it end to the UK?

Scotland’s First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said a second independence referendum was ‘now highly likely.’

London: Speculation is rife that the vote on Brexit may precipitate the end of the UK as well. The contemplation may further be substantiated after Scotland’s First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said a second independence referendum was ‘now highly likely.’ The preference of Scotland for being in the EU may distance it from the UK.

Describing the Brexit decision as a major mistake, Sturgeon said she would now seek “to secure Scotland’s continuing place in the EU and single market in particular.” Her statement is indicating clear signs that Scotland could now break away from the UK.

Every constituency in Scotland voted to Remain. “I am proud of Scotland and how we voted for Remain,” Sturgeon said. London, Cardiff, Manchester and Newcastle were among the areas that backed Remain. On the other hand, the Leave campaign won huge victories Wales and England.

Scotland is considered to be outward-looking, open and inclusive region within the UK. Sturgeon further added that “we said clearly that we do not want to leave the European Union. I am determined that we will do what it takes to make sure that these aspirations are realised.”

In Wales and across the UK, the Leave campaign won huge victories outside the big cities while in Scotland every constituency voted to Remain. Many of those in Scotland who voted to stay in the UK two years ago did so because they wanted to reject a narrow nationalism and its insular view of the world.

Conservative leader and Prime Minister David Cameron on Saturday speaking outside Number 10 Downing Street said the country required ‘fresh leadership.’ However, Cameron will continue as Prime Minister with his Cabinet for the next three months, but prefers to have a new PM in place by October.
