Govt. Medical College issues dress code

Thiruvananthapuram: Students of the government medical college here in the capital of Kerala, particularly the females, are ruffled by a directive prescribing a dress code for all the students.

While the boys have been ordered to maintain a ‘neat and clean dress and appearance with formal dress and shoes’, the women have been asked to wear formals which specifically mean ‘churidar or saree’ and that their hair must be ‘put up’.

The circular also prohibits female students from wearing ‘jeans, leggings or noisy ornaments.’

This notice which has drawn a lot of flak from the students is however not the first to hit the students in Kerala. Earlier this year a college in Kozhikode had banned girls from wearing jeans in the campus.

Female students complain that managing a saree or dupatta constantly is an inconvenience that is multiplied especially during exams and practicals.
