Hyderabad: Imposing a cap on the weight of school bags, the Telangana government on Tuesday issued a list of guidelines to ease the burden on students. Not only the weight of the bags, but the government also decided to reduce the burden of homework for students of Class 1 to Class 5. Students of Classes 1-5 should not be given any homework.
The education chief secretary Ranjeev R. Acharya released the GO No.22 on Tuesday in this regard. "The weight of school bags for Classes 1 and 2 should be below 1.5kg and that of Classes 3 to 5 around 2 to 3kg," the GO stated.
It also mentioned that the students should carry one 100-page notebook for all subjects and another 100-page doubled ruled book for practicing handwriting.
Students from Class 6 to 10 should carry a 200-page notebook for all subjects. The GO also stipulated that Class 1 and 2 will use only mother tongue, English, and Maths text books and Class 3 to 5 will use mother tongue, English, Maths and science text books. For Classes 6 and 7 there won’t be more than six textbooks and for Classes 8 to 10 there will be seven textbooks.
While releasing the GO, the chief secretary of education said that instead of giving homework to the students, enough practice should be made during school hours.
