Nikhil Needs Specialists To Recover, But They Were Banned From Practice!  

Hyderabad: Nikhil Reddy, who underwent height increasing surgery and is going through trauma after it failed, is now a distressed man. The doctors who performed surgery on him were found guilty of unethical practice in misguiding the patient on height increasing surgery and the Medical Council of India (MCI) banned them from doing practice for two years.

The action has only added up to Nikhil's woes instead of bringing any relief as he is being attended to by non-specialists now from Global Hospital. This has further increased the risk and the his recovery is at jeopardy now. Only a handful of orthopaedic surgeons in the city are experts with Ilizarov technique that was used in Nikhil's case.

A two-member team of doctors from Global Hospital visited Nikhil on Monday at his residence at MN Reddy Nagar. The team was headed by Dr Anant Mohan Pai, Head, Medical Services.

"Only an expert doctor will be able to know how much progress Nikhil has made and what steps are needed ahead. The dressing has been done by the team but opinion of an expert must be sought while the bones remain attached to external fixators," said S Narasimha Reddy, Nikhil's uncle.

Dr Pai, who visited Nikhil along with Dr Arvind Gupta said in their next visit they bring a consultant experienced in Ilizarov technique to evaluate his progress.

It may be recalled that taking a tough view of unethical medical practices, the Telangana Medical Council cancelled Dr Chandrabhushan’s practice for two years, who performed surgery on Nikhil at Global Hospital to increase his height by limb extension.

However, after the procedure, Nikhil was confined to bed and is unable to walk. Nikhil's parents lodged complaints with the Human Rights Commission and the Indian Medical Council.

Speaking over the paucity of experts in Ilizarov technique, Dr P Vijayachandra Reddy, secretary general, Orthopaedic Association of South Indian States (OASIS) said, "This technique is used very rarely. In case no expert is found from among private practitioners, Nikhil's treatment can be entrusted to doctors in state-run NIMS by the state medical council."
