NHRC issues notice to AP govt over woman tehsildar assault

New Delhi:National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has issued notices to Andhra Pradesh government over reports of assault on a woman tehsildar by a TDP MLA and an alleged sand mafia in the state's Krishna district.

The notices were issued to the the state's Chief Secretary and and DGP on the basis of media reports that D Vanajakshi, tehsildar of Musunuru, was beaten in the presence of policemen on July 9, 2015.

The Commission has observed that the contents of the media report, if true, raise a serious issue of violation of human rights of the victim, a release by NHRC said.

The rights body has given two weeks' time to the officers of AP Government to submit a factual report about the incident. The (TDP) MLA reached the spot and objected to her action and assaulted the woman officer. "We have sought a report from the chief secretary and director general of police (Andhra Pradesh) on the matter and have given them two weeks' time," said the NHRC.

The policemen present there did not take any step to protect the victim, it added. According to media reports, TDP MLA Prabhakara Rao reached the spot and objected to her action.

Some women present there allegedly dragged the tehsildar away from the spot, in the presence of Rao, revenue officials and police.
