Hyderabad: In a significant development, the Drugs Control Administration (DCA) of Telangana has taken stringent action against the illegal sale of human plasma, resulting in the cancellation of licences for two blood banks in Telangana’s state capital.

The Srikara Hospital Blood Centre in Madinaguda, Miyapur, and the New Life Educational Society Blood Centre in Darulshifa, Hyderabad, have had their licences revoked.

The cancellation comes after it was discovered that these blood banks were engaging in illegal activity related to the sale of human plasma. The illicit activities were discovered during a raid at the Moosapet Haemo Service Laboratories, where a sizable stockpile of human plasma bags was found in an unsanitary state.

Thorough investigations revealed that R. Raghavendra Naik, who runs Haemo Service Laboratories, was unlawfully obtaining plasma from different blood banks and reselling it without permission. The DCA discovered that the blood banks at Srikara Hospital and New Life Educational Society Blood Centre were found to be involved in the illegal sale of plasma.

The Director General of DCA, Kamalasan Reddy, underscored the significance of maintaining the authenticity of blood banking procedures and warned the blood banks of severe consequences if they breach it.

This crackdown coincides with worries that blood donation systems are being exploited for financial gain, creating a false sense of scarcity and putting patients in danger who require life-saving transfusions. The DCA's prompt action demonstrates its dedication to protecting public health and guaranteeing accountability in the healthcare industry.
