A 26-year-old man Nagaraju was brutally beaten and stabbed to death. The incident took place on a busy road in Saroornagar in Hyderabad at around 9 PM on May 4. Nagaraju and Syed Ashrin Sulthana had married three months ago, against their family's wishes. The couple who were traveling on their two-wheeler was stopped by two men and they attacked Nagaraju with iron rods and knives. Ashrin later identified one of the attackers as her brother. Nagaraju died and it all happened within seconds.

Sulthana said, "They killed my husband in the middle of the street. Five people attacked. My brother and others. I begged everyone for help but no one came forward. They killed him in front of my eyes."

Nagaraju and Sulthana had an Arya Samaj wedding on January 31. They had known each other since Class 10. After marriage, Sulthana changed her name to Pallavi.

After the murder of Nagaraju, the hashtag, #JusticeForNagaraju is trending on Twitter.

Shefali Vaidya, an author and speaker took to her Twitter and reacted to the murder of Nagaraju. She tweeted, "Nagaraju was not battered to death with an iron rod because he was a Dalit. He was murdered by a Muslim man because he was a #HINDU and he dared to marry a Muslim girl as per Hindu rites. Great theme for an ‘inter-faith’ love story ad @TanishqJewelry (sic)".
