Telangana on Wednesday Omicron cases. Two foreign nationals, one from Kenya and the other from Somalia tested positive for Omicron. Both of them are residents of Tolichowki. They have been traced by the surveillance teams of the Health Department.

The surveillance system of Telangana to detect the coronavirus cases played a prominent role in finding the first Omicron variant infections.

Director of Pubilc Health, Dr. Srinivasa Rao said that "Despite Kenya and Somalia not in the list of at-risk countries, we have decided to conduct RT-PCR tests of both the passengers. When they tested positive in the RT-PCR tests, we could not shift them to TIMS, Gachibowli because there were no guidelines. We, however, decided to collect blood samples and send them for genome testing. Within a span of 32-hours, we were able to confirm the Omicron variant."

He further stated that the airport surveillance was efficient because both of them tested positive during random tests. 2 percent to 5 percent of swab samples from international passengers who reach Hyderabad from non-at-risk countries will be collected and tested.
