Hyderabad: TPCC senior vice-president and Chairman of Election Commission Coordination committee G Niranjan on Tuesday wrote a letter to the Election Commission pertaining to the seizure of cash from people after the election Model Code of Conduct (MCC) came into effect.

The Congress leader requested Rajiv Kumar, Chief Election Commissioner, to direct the relevant officials to not confiscate money meant for purposes other than election campaigning. He said that if the officials take things on face value, it would cause convenience to the common man.

Notably, the Model Code of Conduct came into effect on October 9, 2023 when the Election Commission announced the poll schedule for Telangana Assembly elections. Since then the authorities have launched the vehicle checking operation and have been confiscating cash and gold, which may not have anything to do with the poll-related process, he said in the letter.

Niranjan said he understands that the EC wants to curb the flow of money being used to influence the voters, however, the vehicle checking should not cause trouble to the common people.

The Congress leader said the EC officials returned the hard earned money of common people in 2018, however, as the gap between the announcement of 2023 Telangana assembly poll schedule and the polling day is approximately 51 days, the rightful owners of the seized money have to wait till the completion of polling to get their money or gold back which may cause unnecessary trouble for them.
