Centre Can Procure COVID Vaccines From Countries With Surplus Stock

KT Rama Rao, the Telangana Minister of Information Technology and Industries, has stated that the Centre should immediately start steps to buy Covid-19 vaccinations from nations that have a large inventory of unused Covid vaccines. KTR inaugurated a 150-bed ICU unit for Covid patients at the Telangana Institute of Medical Sciences (TIMS), Gachibowli on Friday. He stated that to ensure that everyone gets vaccinated, the Centre must implement procedures to obtain Covid vaccines and set up a distribution line for States.

The Centre should have a common price and distribution strategy for Covid-19 vaccines, he added and said that it must understand that their primary role is to buy vaccines from other nations and then deliver them to States so that they may deliver them to the public at no cost.

KTR said "My information suggests that four countries, including the US, Norway, Denmark, and Canada alone are sitting on an unused stockpile of nearly 50 crore Covid vaccines manufactured by AstraZeneca. What is preventing the Centre from opening a communication channel with these countries and procuring those vaccines for the Indian population?"

The Centre has clearly made mistakes in the acquisition and administration of Covid vaccinations. The Centre opted to export Covid vaccinations at a time when the entire country needed them. Because there was no guarantee that enough Covid vaccinations would be available, the Centre decided to open up immunisation to those aged 18 to 44, which has complicated the procedure even more, he added.

Instead of talking to other foreign vaccine makers about importing Covid vaccines, Bharat Biotech and Serum Institute are putting too much pressure on themselves to satisfy India's vaccination demand. Rao stated that relying just on these two producers would not be sufficient to fulfill the total demand.
