The Lucknow-based team, one of two new franchises to enter the Indian Premier League (IPL) for the 2022 season, has officially announced their name. The team will be known as the Lucknow Super Giants, putting an end to weeks of suspense.

Last year, the franchise was bought for a hefty Rs. 7090 crore by the Sanjiv Goenka-owned RPSG company. The other squad to enter the tournament is from Ahmedabad, which was purchased by Irelia Company Pte Ltd. (CVC Capital Partners) for Rs. 5635 crores.

Lucknow unveiled their three pre-auction choices last week, with ex-Punjab Kings (PBKS) captain and Indian opener KL Rahul set to captain the club. Rahul will be paid Rs. 17 crores, making him the joint-highest paid player in IPL history, along with Virat Kohli, who earned the same wage for Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) from 2018 to 2021.

They paid Rs. 9.2 crores for Australian all-rounder Marcus Stoinis, along with Rahul. Stoinis spent the previous two seasons with the Delhi Capitals (DC), where he was a key contributor to the team's achieving its first-ever final in 13 years in 2020.
