'Women Should Be Restricted to Kitchen': Saina's Strong Response to MLA

Indian badminton star Saina Nehwal criticized a veteran Congress leader from Karnataka for making anti-women remarks publicly. On Saturday, the former Olympic medalist took to social media to denounce the remarks made by Shamanur Shivashankarappa, a 92-year-old sitting MLA from Davanagere South.

Shivashankarappa has stated that Gayatri Siddeshwara, the BJP candidate from Davanagere and wife of former Union Minister Siddeshwara GM, "belonged to the kitchen". His controversial statement implied that a woman's place is in home and not in politics.

Nehwal expressed her disappointment with the Congress leader's outdated and misogynistic views. In a post on her 'X' account, she wrote, "Women should be restricted to the kitchen this-is what a top Karnataka leader Shamanur Shivashankarappa ji has said. This sexist jibe at @bjp4india candidate from Davanagere Gayathri Siddeshwara ji is least expected from a party that says Ladki Hoon Lad Sakti Hoon."

The 34-year-old badminton player who won a bronze medal at the 2012 London Olympics, emphasized that remarks are upsetting when women are aspiring for greatness in every field.

"When I won medals for Bharat on the play field what would congress party have preferred I should have done? Why say like that when all the girls and women dream of achieving big in any field they like?"'she questioned.

Nehwal also highlighted the contradiction between Congress party's claims of empowering women and Shivashankarappa's derogatory statement. "On one hand we are doing Nari Shakti ko Vandan. The Women’s Reservation Bill has been passed under leadership of our PM Modi sir and on the other hand Nari Shakti ka apman &  misogynistic people.. Really upsetting," she wrote.

Shivashankarappa made the controversial remark while addressing Congress party workers at Bunts Bhavan in the district recently. "Gayatri doesn't know how to speak properly. She is only fit to cook food at home," he said drawing widespread criticism for his outdated views and sexist remarks.
