Every year, September 29 is observed as World Heart Day and the main aim behind celebrating this day is to create public awareness of cardiovascular diseases, their prevention, and their global impact.

History and Theme:

World Heart Federation (WHF) collaborated with the World Health Organisation (WHO) and founded World Health Day in 1999. The idea was conceived by Antoni Bayes de Luna, the president of WHF from 1997-2011.

Significance:

According to WHF, "World Heart Day informs people around the globe that CVD, including heart disease and stroke, is the world's leading cause of death claiming 18.6 million lives each year, and highlights the actions that individuals can take to prevent and control CVD. It aims to drive action to educate people that by controlling risk factors such as tobacco use, unhealthy diet, and physical inactivity, at least 80% of premature deaths from heart disease and stroke could be avoided."
