Karnataka Man Quits Tech Job to Open Donkey Farm

Mangaluru: It may sound bizarre, but a man from the city has found a business idea in donkeys. A 42-year-old Srinivas Gowda quit his software company job to start a donkey farm. He opened a donkey farm in Ira village in Dakshina Kannada district, which is a first of its kind in Karnataka and a second in the country. The first donkey farm was opened in Ernakulam district of Kerala.

It was not an easy task for Gowda as people made fun of him when he discussed opening a donkey farm. He was already running an integrated agriculture and animal husbandry, veterinary services, training and fodder development center in Ira village. In his farm, you can find goats, rabbits and Khadaknath chickens.

Gowda said he was moved by the plight of the donkeys. He was also worried about the dwindling numbers of this poor animal as donkeys are no longer useful for the washermen as laundry machines have left most of them jobless.

Gowda says donkey’s milk is not only delicious but also expensive and has medicinal value. It is also used in making beauty products. He is supplying donkey’s milk to people in small packets. A 30 ml of milk packet will cost Rs 150 and Gowda is planning to sell it through malls, shops and supermarkets. Within days of opening a farm, Gowda claims he has received an order for Rs 17 lakh.
