PULWAMA: In a chilling reminder of the 2019 Pulwama attack, security forces averted a vehicle-borne IED blast that was detected in a car fitted with 40-45 kg explosives in Pulwama district of Jammu and Kashmir on Wednesday night.
The improvised explosive device (IED) was safely defused, police said, a leading channel reported.
Over 40 soldiers died in a terror attack in Pulwama when a suicide bomber drove a car full of explosives into a CRPF convoy on February 14, 2019.
“A major incident of a vehicle borne IED blast is averted by the timely input and action by Pulwama Police, CRPF and Army,” the Kashmir zone police wrote on its Twitter handle.
According to police, a white Hyundai car was flagged by security forces at a mobile vehicle check point but the driver sped away. They said the security forces fired few shots at the car, which they found abandoned some distance away. During checking, an IED was found fitted in the vehicle, which was later defused.
"The security forces opened fire. The driver managed to escape, leaving behind the car laden with IED," Inspector General of Police Vijay Kumar said.
"We got intelligence about a possible attack. We were looking for a vehicle with IED since yesterday," he added.
"The terrorist intended to target vehicles of security forces. We are calling expert teams from outside. We suspect that the vehicle was carrying 40-45 kg of explosives," Kumar said, a news agency ANI reported. Kumar said that the suspect could be a Hizbul Mujahideen terrorist, who is also in touch with Jaish-e-Mohammed.
