Overnight Rains Claim 13 Lives in Uttar Pradesh

Lucknow: At least 13 people were killed in rain related incidents in parts of Uttar Pradesh, the police said on Friday. Due to incessant rains on Thursday night, an under-construction boundary wall of an Army enclave collapsed in Luncknow’s Dilkusha area and nine labourers were buried alive under the debris.

“Some labourers were living in huts outside an Army enclave in the Dilkusha area. Owing to heavy overnight rains, the boundary wall of the Army enclave collapsed," Joint Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) Piyush Mordia told PTI. He added that one person was pulled out alive from the debris. 

According to the police, the victims lived in huts outside the enclave and were sleeping when the rains brought down the under-construction boundary wall. Locals said the incident took place between 2 am and 3 am. 

The deceased include three men, three women and three children, a police officer said. Meanwhile, the Yogi government has announced financial assistance of Rs 4 lakh to the families of the deceased. The Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed grief over the loss of lives, the Chief Minister's Office (CMO) tweeted in Hindi.

Four people including two children died in separate wall collapse incidents in Unnao district. Additional District Magistrate (Finance and Revenue) Narendra Singh said three members of a family in Kantha village of the district died after a wall of their house collapsed following the overnight rains. In Chandpur Jhalihai villages, a 66-year-old Bal Govind died in a similar incident.
