Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot on Friday made it clear that he will be running for the post of Congress Chief in the party's presidential elections scheduled in October. Ashok Gehlot speaking to ANI said, "It's decided that I'll contest for the post of Congress President. I'll fix the date soon to file the nomination. It's a need for the Opposition to be strong, looking at the current position of the country."

While addressing the media in Kerala on Friday, Gehlot said, "I have requested him (Rahul Gandhi) multiple times to accept everyone's proposal to become the Congress President. He made it clear that no one from the Gandhi family should become the next chief."

Ashok Gehlot and party MP Shashi Tharoor are likely to contend for the upcoming election which is being held after more than two decades. However, Congress committees across the country are holding meetings wherein a resolution is being passed stating that "we authorise the incoming Congress president to appoint PCC and AICC members."

On the other hand, many senior Congress leaders like former Union Minister Manish Tewari, former MP CM Kamal Nath and Digvijaya Singh, Mukul Wasnik, and Prithviraj Chavan are likely to contest for the top post.

The election of the new president is going to create history as Sonia Gandhi, the longest-serving party president will be replaced.
