Indian legendary sprinter Milkha Singh's wife, Nirmal Kaur, a former women volleyball team captain succumbed to Covid-19 at the Mohali Hospital on Sunday. She was 85 and is survived by her husband, one son and three daughters.A family member said, "Flying Sikh Milkha Singh could not attend the cremation of Nirmal as he is still in the ICU (of PGIMER in Chandigarh) himself."
Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh paid tributes to the demise of Nirmal Kaur. “I am saddened to learn about the death of one of the iconic volleyball players who brought several honours for the country thus making every Punjabi proud,” Singh said.
Nirmal contracted the virus last month and was admitted to the hospital two days after Milkha was admitted due to Covid. Milkha was discharged on the request of the family a week later but Nirmal was at the hospital battling the virus.
Milkha and his wife were suspected to have contracted the infection from a house help. Nirmal’s son and ace golfer Jeev Milkha Singh and daughter Mona Milkha Singh, who is a doctor in the United States were in attendance during the last rites.
