JNU Scholar Sharjeel Imam Gets Bail in Hate Speech Case

Sharjeel Imam, a JNU scholar, and activist was granted bail in one of the cases filed against him by the Uttar Pradesh police. However, Sharjeel will continue to remain behind bars as he is also charged in a UAPA case related to the Northeast Delhi riots. Sharjeel was granted bail under FIR No. 55/2020, lodged by Civil Lines, Aligarh said his brother Muzzammil Imam.



Muzzammil Imam took his Twitter and tweeted "Bail has been granted to my brother Sharjeel @_imaams in the FIR No. 55/2020, registered by Civil Lines, Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh Police. One more step towards his release which shows that eventually, truth prevails over lies, propaganda & witchhunt."

The Aligarh police filed a sedition charge against Sharjeel Imam following his speech at Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) on January 16, during which he reportedly made "anti-national" statements. Sections 124 A (sedition), 153 A (provocation with intent to cause riots), 153 B (whoever by words either spoken or written or by signs makes or publishes any imputation, assertions prejudicial to national-integration or may cause disharmony) and 505 (2) of the Indian Penal Code(IPC) were used at the Civil Lines police station. Imam is currently imprisoned in Tihar. He had been imprisoned for 665 days till Saturday.
