CHENNAI: Nokia suspended its operations at telecoms gear manufacturing plant in Tamil Nadu after as many as 42 of its employees tested positive for coronavirus, the company said on Tuesday.

However, the company did not disclose how many workers at the plant in Sriperumbudur in Tamil Nadu tested positive. But a source close to the company said at least 42 were diagnosed as infected with virus.

According to media reports, the company said that it had already implemented measures such as social distancing and changes to canteen facilities.

Reportedly, Nokia had begun operations in a restricted manner over the past few weeks, after the central government eased the lockdown  to kick-start its economy which has been badly affected by the nationwide shutdown.

"We hope to resume operations soon at a restricted level with skeletal staff strength," Nokia said in a statement.

Last week, Chinese smartphone maker OPPO also suspended operations at plant on the outskirts of New Delhi after at least nine workers tested positive for the novel coronavirus. However, recently it resumed the operations again.
