12 Labourers Killed in Wall Collapse at Gujarat Factory

At least 12 people were killed in a wall collapse in Morbi district on Wednesday. Three people are feared buried in the rubble. The tragic incident took place at Sagar Salt factory situated inside the Halvad Industrial area, state Labour and Employment Minister and local MLA Brijesh Merja said. 

“At least 12 workers have died due to the wall collapse. Efforts to rescue others who might have been trapped under the debris are still on,” he said. 

Expressing grief over the tragedy in Gujarat factory, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced a compensation of Rs 2 lakh each for the family of those who died in the wall collapse. 

“The tragedy in Morbi caused by a wall collapse is heart-rending. In this hour of grief, my thoughts are with the bereaved families. May the injured recover soon. Local authorities are providing all possible assistance to the affected,” Prime Minister Modi tweeted.

Gujarat Chief minister Bhupendra Patel has also announced a compensation of Rs 4 lakh each for the family of the victims. Earlier in the day, Union Home Minister Amit Shah spoke to Patel over phone and the chief minister apprised him of the rescue efforts. 

Meanwhile, a statement from the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) said, Rs 2 lakh each from Prime Minister's National Relief Fund (PMNRF) would be given to the next of kin of those who have lost their lives in the Sagar Salt factory incident in Morbi while the injured person would be given Rs 50,000 compensation.
