Sydney resident Helaina Alati was at an Australian supermarket when she came face to face with a massive snake.

The 3-meter-long (10-foot-long) non-venomous diamond python's head appeared from a gap in a shelf above the spice jars at the Sydney supermarket.

"I was in the spice aisle searching for something to put on my chicken that night, so I didn't spot it right away since it was coiled up far back behind the small jars of spices," Alati explained on Wednesday. "I turned to the right, and it popped its head out."

Alati, who is also a professional snake catcher, stated that the snake's head came within 20 centimeters (8 inches) of her own.

"Fortunately, I had experience with snakes, so I was unfazed. It really surprised me because I wasn't expecting it "She continued.

Woolworths acknowledged in a statement that a "slippery and unusual customer was observed in the spice aisle" at its Glenorie store on Sydney's northwest suburbs on Monday morning.

According to the statement, "Once it was spotted, our team members proceeded immediately and calmly to block off the area for the safety of consumers."

Alati stated that she used her phone to film the snake as it extended its body from the shelf into the aisle before reporting the invader to grocery staff.

"'I'll get my snake bag,' I said. To be honest, I think they thought I was nuts. When I told them there was a 10-foot python in their aisle, I don't think they knew what to say "According to Alati.

She got the snake-catching bag from her nearby home and trapped the snake, which had by then retreated back inside the shelf. She then released it into the neighbouring woods.

Anyway, it is unclear how and when the snake entered the supermarket.

Alati, who was taught to catch venous snakes while volunteering for a wildlife rescue organisation in Sydney several years ago, assumed the snake was a male hunting for a mate.
