Hyderabad: Innovative Protest by Manikonda Residents Over Water Scarcity

10 Mar, 2024 13:13 IST|Sakshi Post

In Manikonda, a suburb under the Manikonda Municipality, Hyderabad, residents of Khizra Colony are facing a severe water crisis. Despite repeated pleas for adequate water supply, local leaders have turned a blind eye to their plight. The upcoming parliamentary elections have heightened tensions as residents chose to express their dissatisfaction through innovative means.

The insufficient water supply from the municipality has left many households without water. This has led to a decrease in water pressure and exacerbated hygiene issues in the area. Despite numerous appeals to the water board officials and local representatives, no concrete action has been taken to address the situation.

In response to this negligence, residents of the Khizra Colony have initiated a unique protest. At the entrance of the colony, flexes declaring, "No water, no entry", "No entry for Politician asking for votes" among others were prominently displayed. These messages have gained traction on social media drawing attention to their struggle.

As residents of Khizra Colony are grappling with severe water shortage, many areas in Bengaluru are also facing recurring drinking water shortage. Residents have been facing rising costs and inadequate water supply causing difficulties in accessing essential water services. The scarcity has forced people of the Silicon city to book water tanks days in advance with costs escalating and delivery delays becoming common. As the situation worsens, concerns about health risks due to lack of water for basic needs are actively being raised.

As temperatures soar in India, particularly in cities like Hyderabad and Bengaluru, water scarcity issues are on the rise. The impending water crisis highlights the urgency for effective water management practices and conservative efforts to ensure sustainable water supply during the hotter months ahead. Sustainable solutions and effective governance are the need of the hour to tackle water shortage in the country.
