Delhi: BJP MP From Himachal's Mandi Ram Swaroop Sharma Found Dead

NEW DELHI: Ram Swaroop Sharma (62)  a BJP MP from Mandi in Himachal Pradesh was found hanging from the ceiling in his official residence in New Delhi on Wednesday, police said. According to the police, his personal assistant had  called  the Police Control Room at  7.45 am in the morning after the BJP MP did not respond to knocks on his door.

A police team reached the spot and forced open the door and  only to find Sharma hanging from a ceiling fan. He was immediately taken to a hospital where doctors pronounced him dead on arrival. Prima facie, it appears to be a case of suicide, the police said, however no suicide note was found from the spot. Lok Sabha proceedings were adjourned until 1 PM after an obituary reference to Sharma.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that his demise was most unfortunate and extended his condolences.

Born at Jalpehar village in Mandi district on June 10, 1958, Sharma was a two-time Lok Sabha MP from the Mandi parliamentary constituency in 2014 and 2019 respectively. The BJP cancelled its parliamentary party meeting today following the news of party MP Ram Swaroop Sharma's death.

Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Jairam Thakur expressed regret over the death of Sharma  and that  this was very heartbreaking news. In his twitter message he said that this was not the time to go, Ram Swaroop Sharma.  I am deeply saddened to hear the news of the untimely demise of Shri Ramswaroop Sharma who was popular in Chhoti Kashi Mandi. He was of simple nature and an honest MP, he tweeted.

An inquiry is underway and the exact cause of his death will be ascertained after a post-mortem examination, Delhi police said.
