YSRCP: CAA in its current form is unacceptable, needs amendments to make it more inclusive

The YSRCP has voiced its opposition to the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) in its current form. MLA Hafeez Khan made a key statement that the CAA needs more amendments to make it more inclusive and provides equal rights to citizens, regardless of their religion.

Khan shared that the state government under YS Jagan Mohan Reddy does not support the CAA and NRC. He emphasized that the YSRCP has always stood for non-discrimination on basis of religion, caste, party lines or region.

"Our party president, in the last 5 years has mentioned hundreds of times that there will be no discrimination on the basis of religion, caste, party lines, or even region with respect to the social welfare programmes, law, and order or justice," he said.

"YSRCP doesn't accept CAA rules in its current format because we, on the floor of the Parliament, have sought amendments to the law so that it is acceptable to each and everyone. We should amend it in a way that we give the same rights to Hindus, Parsis, Jains, Sikhs, and Christians, as well as Muslims."

CAA later can depend on NRC (National Register for Citizens) and NPR (National Population Register). In NRC or NPR, if an Indian Muslim is not able to prove his citizenship, then the CAA will not apply to him. However, if anyone from any other religion faces a similar situation, then CAA will be applicable and provide him protection.

"Today, somewhere within the system, there is a lot of distress within the Muslim community that they might be targeted through NRC / NPR and CAA will not be able to shield them. So we request the central government to rethink and take everyone into confidence."

The YSRCP has requested the central government to rethink the CAA. They believe that it should be amended in a way that it provides the same rights to Hindus, Parsis, Jains, Sikhs, Christians and Muslims.
