Tenali: Andhra Pradesh police on Thursday made first arrest in Geetanjali case who died by suicide due to the online harassment. Tenali police arrested the accused who has been identified as Pasumarthi Rambabu. The accused appears to be a follower of former TDP MLA Bonda Umamaheswara Rao.

Family members of Geetanjali, who was a resident of Tenali, went on record saying that she committed suicide following harassment / trolling / abuse and body shaming on social media by members of Opposition parties following her endorsement of CM YS Jagan’s good governance and welfare benefits.

Depressed Geetanjali took the extreme step on March 7 and succumbed to her injuries on March 11, 2024. She was a beneficiary of Jagananna Housing Scheme. The deceased was happy that she got a free plot from the YS Jagan government and she could not contain her happiness and kept showering praises on the YSRCP regime. She also said that she would vote for the ruling party. However, she was badly trolled and body shamed by a section of social media users which led her to take her own life.

Following the incident, Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy conveyed his profound dismay and heartfelt condolences to the inconsolable family members of Geetanjali. Expressing his unwavering commitment to justice, he promptly instructed government authorities to extend an ex-gratia compensation of Rs 20 lakh and provide comprehensive assistance to Geetanjali's bereaved family.

Furthermore, the Chief Minister underscored the government's unequivocal stance on safeguarding the honour and dignity of individuals, particularly women. He reiterated that those who transgress the boundaries of respect and decency will face the full force of the law.
