TDP-Jana Sena ‘Love’ Affair: How Long Will It Last?

14 Feb, 2024 19:01 IST|Sakshi Post

Today is Valentine’s day and the people world over are celebrating the day of love and exchanging gifts and flowers with their special ‘valentine’. V-day reminds us of the beautiful tapestry of coming together of two people.

On the occasion of Valentine’s day, the ruling YSRCP took a swipe at the TDP-Jana Sena combine and termed their pre-poll alliance a manifestation of ‘politics of opportunism’. It said the leaders of TDP and Jana Sena Party claim that their alliance is intact, however, this is not the case at the party level.

Ever since Chandrababu Naidu and Pawan Kalyan forged an electoral alliance, the tensions continue to simmer in members of both parties. Jana Sena is focused on undivided Godavari and Krishna districts as the leadership thinks it has a strong presence in this region. However, the TDP dealt a huge blow to the minor ally by announcing candidates for Mandepeta and Araku seats for the ensuing Assembly elections.

This angered Pawan Kalyan and his party countered the ‘unilateral decision’ of the TDP by declaring its candidates from Razole and Rajanagaram Assembly segments. Jana Sena had won only Razole assembly seat in the 2019 Assembly polls, however, its MLA R Vara Prasada Rao later defected to the YSRCP.

Recently, the fissures in the TDP-Jana Sena alliance came to the fore when the TDP national general secretary Nara Lokesh embarked on a poll campaign titled 'Shankaravam' from Ichchapuram in Srikakulam. During the programme, the TDP leaders and workers stopped the local Jana Sena leaders and supporters from participating in Lokesh’s rally. After an altercation, the Jansainiks were forced to go back home. The Jana Sena Party flags were also taken down ahead of Lokesh’s campaign.

Both Naidu and Pawan are dreaming of stopping the YSRCP juggernaut in the simultaneous Assembly and Lok Sabha elections in the state. However, the electoral alliance is weakening by the day. With no bonhomie between the parties’ cadres, it will be an uphill task for the opposition alliance to make an impact in the state polls.
